No sound is on your ASUS monitor? That can be frustrating. Don’t worry. You can fix the problem with one of the methods below.
Try the following methods one by one until you find the one that works for you.
Method 1: Ensure your monitor has built-in speakers
Method 2: Ensure the monitor’s speaker volume is not muted
Method 3: Set the monitor as default device
Method 4: Update the sound driver and the graphics card driver
Method 5: Check the hardware
Method 1: Ensure your monitor has built-in speakers
If you encounter the no sound issue with your new monitor, it’s recommended you check your monitor’s specs first. Check and see if the monitor has built-in speakers. If your monitor doesn’t have built-in speakers, you can’t hear sound directly from the monitor.
Go to ASUS’s website, and search your monitor’s model name then you’ll be directed to the product’s page, where you can get the monitor’s specs. You can tell from the specs tell if your monitor has built-in speakers.
Tip: If your monitor doesn’t have built-in speakers, to hear the sound, you need to use an external speaker and plug it into the headphone jack.
Method 2: Ensure the monitor’s speaker volume is not muted
When you can’t hear sound from your ASUS monitor, it’s possible the monitor’s speaker volume is muted. So check and ensure the monitor’s speaker volume is not muted. To do so:
1) Right-click on the speaker icon in the bottom right corner of the desktop and select Open Volume mixer.
2) In the Device section, select the monitor and check if it’s muted. If it’s muted, unmute it then you’ll hear the sound again.
Method 3: Set the monitor as default device
If the monitor is not set as the default device in Playback, you can’t hear sound from the monitor. In that case, setting the monitor as the default device can fix the problem. Here’s how to do it.
1) Right-click on the speaker icon in the bottom right corner of the desktop and select Sounds.
2) Go to the Playback tab, then check if the monitor is set as the default device. If not, select the monitor option then click the Set Default button. After that, click OK -> Apply to save the changes.
If you don’t see any monitor option in the Playback tab, it can be disabled and hidden. To make it appear, right-click on any blank place, then select Show Disabled Devices and Show Disconnected Devices. Once it appears, you can set it as the default device with the above mentioned steps.
Method 4: Update the sound driver and the graphics card driver
Faulty or outdated drivers (the sound driver and the graphics card driver) can cause your ASUS monitor no sound. To fix the problem, you can try updating the sound driver and the graphics card driver.
You can manually update the drivers if you want. Just head to the PC manufacturer’s website or the device manufacturer’s website to download the latest drivers corresponding to the Windows version you have.
If you don’t have the time and computer skills to update the drivers manually, you can do it automatically with a third-party driver update utility.
Method 5: Check the hardware
If none of the above methods works, it’s possible a hardware issue. The connection cable, the ports or the monitor can be damaged. You can perform a hardware troubleshooting and see if it’s a hardware issue.
- Check if the cable has any problems. If possible, connect the monitor to the computer with another cable and see if the problem persists. If the problem is gone, a damaged cable is probably the cause.
- Check if the output port works properly. If your computer has multiple output ports (for example, multiple HDMI ports), try another port and see if the problem persists.
- Check if the monitor works properly. If possible, connect the monitor to another computer and see if the problem persists.
Hopefully you can fix the ASUS monitor no sound issue with the above methods. If you have any questions, feel free to leave a comment below. I’ll get back to you ASAP.
I am working with a new monitor, ASUS-XG49VQ and I am not able to get the sound to work. I walked through all of your steps and was not able to get any sound.
Any other suggestions on how to utilize the speakers in the monitor through the HDMI Cable?
