You can’t join your Minecraft server due to the error “Failed to verify username”. Don’t worry. The error occurs either on the server end or on your end. To fix it, you can try the following methods.

Method 1: Check on Mojang Twitter account
Errors like the “Failed to verify username” error are often due to a temporary service outage, and handled by the team outside the bug tracker. If that’s the case, you can do nothing but wait until the issue is fixed.
If the error is temporary occuring on the official end, there will be official announcements about it. Check on Mojang’s Twitter account (Mojang Status) and see if there are any official announcements about this error. If yes, what you need to do is wait patiently until the error is fixed.
If there are no official announcements, the error probably occurs on your end. Then read on to learn how to fix it.
Method 2: Check your network connection
Poor network connection can be the cause of this error. Check your network connection and ensure it works fine. If you’re using a Wi-Fi connection, it’s recommended you switch to a wired connection and see if the issue persists.
If you verify the network connection is not the cause, continue to try other methods.
Method 3: Try logging out of Minecraft launcher and logging back in
To fix the “Failed to verify username” error, you can simply try logging out of the launcher and logging back in.
Here’s how:
1) Quit the game.
2) Open your Minecraft launcher.
3) Click your game profile icon at the top left and select Log out.
4) Log in to the Minecraft launcher again.
5) Check to see if the issue is resolved.
Note: This method only works for the Minecraft launcher. If you’re using other launchers like the TLauncher, skip and try other methods.
Method 4: Edit the hosts file
When the Minecraft “Failed to verify username” error occurs, the hosts file list can be corrupted, for example, the Minecraft entries in the hosts file are not properly configured. In this case, removing the Minecraft entries from the hosts file may help fix the issue.
Here’s how:
1) Press the Windows logo key, type “notepad”, right-click Notepad and select Run as administrator.
2) Once the Notepad opens, click File and then select Open…
3) Type “%SystemRoot%\System32\drivers\etc\hosts” in the File name box and click Open. After that, the hosts file will open.
4) Delete any line containing “Mojang“ or “Minecraft”.
5) Press Ctrl+S to save the hosts file.
6) Relaunch Minecraft and check to see if the issue is fixed.
Method 5: Change the server online-mode to offline
When you try to join the Minecraft server, the server authentication system may check the license of your account. If the server authentication system determines your account isn’t licensed, you’ll fail to connect to the server and encounter the “Failed to verify username” error. In this case, disabling the license check may help resolve the issue.
Here’s how:
1) Open the server folder where you store the server files.
2) Locate and right-click on the server.properties file, select Open with -> Notepad. Then the file will open as a .txt file.
3) Locate the “online-mode=true” line, and change it to “online-mode=false”.
4) Save your changes and close the server.properties file.
5) Check to see if the “Failed to verify username” error is resolved.
Method 6: Edit server settings to allow cracked Minecraft
If you’re using a cracked version of Minecraft, you’ll be rejected to join the server and encounter the error “Failed to verify username”. In this case, you can stop running the cracked version and use the paid version instead. Alternatively, you can edit the server settings to allow cracked Minecraft.
Usually, you can go to your server hosting to edit the server settings. The steps vary depending on the server hosting you’re using. Following we take Aternos hosting and Apex Hosting for example.
For Aternos hosting, here’s how to allow cracked Minecraft:
1) Log in to your Aternos Server Control Panel.
2) Stop the server.
3) Click Options, then enable Cracked and Whitelist.
4) Start the server.
5) Join your Minecraft server again. You should be able to join it successfully.
For Apex Hosting, here’s how to allow cracked Minecraft:
1) Log in to your Apex Hosting Server Control Panel.
2) Stop your Minecraft server.
3) Click Config Files -> Server Settings, and then set Online Mode to Disabled.
4) Save the changes.
5) Start the server.
6) Check to see if you can join your Minecraft server.
Tip: If you have no idea how to allow cracked Minecraft on your server, you should contact the support of your server hosting for the detailed steps.
Method 7: Disable VPN
Sometimes a VPN can stop you from joining the servers and cause errors like “Failed to verify username”.
If you have any VPN running when the “Failed to verify username” occurs, disable them and see if the issue persists. If the issue is gone, then the VPN is the cause. If you verify the VPN is the cause, you can add Minecraft to the exception list of the VPN or switch to other VPNs.
