[SOLVED] No Sound after Adding Second Monitor

After adding a second monitor, you can’t hear sound any more. Not to worry. This is one of the common sound issues occurring in Windows 10 & 11. To get the sound back, you can try the methods below.

You can try the six methods below one by one until you find the one that helps resolve the issue.

Method 1: Run the audio troubleshooter
Method 2: Make sure the devices aren’t muted
Method 3: Make sure the audio devices aren’t disabled
Method 4: Check your speaker output
Method 5: Check your default output audio device
Method 6: Update audio drivers

Method 1: Run the audio troubleshooter

The audio troubleshooter built in Windows 10/11 can help fix sound problems automatically. You can run it to fix your no sound with second monitor issues.

You can follow these steps to run the audio troubleshooter :

1) On your keyboard, press the Windows logo key, type “audio troubleshooter“, then select Find and fix problems with playing sound.

2) Select Next. Then Windows will start detecting problems.

3) Select the device you want to troubleshoot and then select Next. Then follow through the prompts.

If running the audio troubleshooter doesn’t help resolve the problem, continue to Method 2.

Method 2: Make sure the devices aren’t muted

Check to make sure your audio devices aren’t muted. To do so:

1) Right-click the speaker icon on the taskbar and select Open Volume mixer.

2) In the Device section, make sure all devices aren’t muted. If any of them are muted, you’ll see a red circle with a line through it next to the volume control. In that case, select the volume control to unmute.

If Method 2 doesn’t work for you, continue to Method 3.

Method 3: Make sure the audio devices aren’t disabled

Check to make sure your audio devices aren’t disabled. Here’s how:

1) On your keyboard, press Win+I to open the Settings window.

2) Select System.

3) Select Sound then select your audio device under Choose your output device, and then click on Device Properties.

4) Make sure the Disable check box is cleared.

If Method 3 doesn’t work for you, continue to Method 4.

Method 4: Check your speaker output

If the audio device is not selected correctly, you won’t hear sound from the audio device you prefer. So check your speaker output and make sure you have the appropriate audio device selected. Here’s how:

1) Click the speaker icon on the taskbar.

2) Click on the arrow icon to open a list of audio devices connected to your computer.

3) Make sure your audio is playing to the audio device you prefer. For example, if you’d like to play sound from the monitor, make sure the monitor is selected.

If Method 4 doesn’t work for you, continue to Method 5.

Method 5: Check your default output audio device

If your second monitor doesn’t have built-in speakers and it’s selected as your default audio device, you’ll encounter no sound issues. So check your default output audio device settings and make sure the default output audio device is set correctly. Here’s how:

1) On your keyboard, press Win+R (the Windows logo key and the R key) to open the Run Command dialog box.

2) Type “control mmsys.cpl sounds” and press Enter. Then the Sound window will open.

3) At the Playback tab, check if the audio device you prefer is set as the default device. For example, if you want to hear sound from your primary monitor, ensure your primary monitor is set as the default device.

Select the audio device, click the Set Default button then click Apply -> OK to save the changes.

If Method 5 doesn’t work for you, continue to Method 6.

Method 6: Update audio drivers

No sound issues can be caused by outdated or malfunctioning audio drivers. To fix your no sound with second monitor issues, you can try updating the audio driver and make sure the audio driver is up to date.
